In England, the Sainsbury’s superstore located at Cannock uses unsold, rotten food scraps to power its store.
Sainsbury has teamed with the U.K.’s largest anaerobic digestion plant, run by Biffa, to turn food waste into bio methane gas. Then, the gas is used to generate electricity and a mile-long cable now connects the Biffa facility to a nearby Sainsbury store.
“Sainsbury’s sends absolutely no waste to landfill and we’re always looking for new ways to re-use and recycle, said Paul Crewe, head of sustainability at Sainsbury’s, reported by BBC. We’re delighted to be the first business ever to make use of this link-up technology, allowing our Cannock store to be powered entirely by our food waste, he said.
The store took two years of planning to reach this environmentally friendly food recycling endeavor.
