The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate America! Our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. And the world hasn’t been the same since.

We celebrate Independence Day with fireworks and flags, parades and patriotism. But the holiday wouldn’t be the same without some of our favorite foods grown and raised by American farmers. In fact, agriculture holds a very important role in our nation’s history.

Our nation was founded as an agrarian society. European settlers came to the New World seeking religious freedom and the chance at a better quality of life.

Native Americans taught the colonists how to grow New World crops such as corn, beans, potatoes, tobacco and cotton. In turn, colonists brought ideas, implements and livestock from overseas to turn subsistence farming into larger operations with surplus for trade.

Agriculture brought trade. Trade brought prosperity. Prosperity brought independence.

The new colonists were successful in gaining independence partially because of their ability to produce their own food and supplies. Without agriculture, our forefathers would not have been able to create the United States of America.

So, enjoy your Fourth of July celebrations with some great burgers made from quality Texas beef, or celebrate by making some grilled street corn featuring a New World staple crop and Texas favorite, fresh corn.

Agriculture and its role in American independence is definitely something worth celebrating.

Enjoy the day knowing you are part of a nation founded on agriculture and freedom. And remember all who make that possible, including our military veterans.

We are fortunate to be able to call ourselves Americans. Happy Independence Day!
